A boat can catch a fire. This fire can be very hazardous in certain cases. A boat is surrounded by water by still it can catch a fire. Safety measures are needed to be taken immediately. This fire can be because of many things that includes the engine, kitchen items, electricity etc. Out of all these, the fire because of some techincal issue in the engine is the most common. Therefore, it is needed to thoroughly educate the people on such serious issues. Not everyone can explain these technicalities to the people coming for leisure or recreational activities. It is an appointed job that is either done by the captain of the boat or the operator.

  • Boat’s captain/ operator Responsibility:

It is divided into steps. The steps are as follows:

  • The captain or operator must inform all the people of the fire safety before getting on the boat. He should make sure that everyone is well informed and that instead of panicking in case any such event hapoens, they should show deceny and work according to the instructions given by the captain.
  • The captain should tell the people about the fire extinguisher i.e. how to use it and where is it located in case a fire happens.
  • The captain should also inform the people about the other safety items present on the boat. Other safety items includes the life jackets/ personal floatation devices, emergency exits etc.
  • The Captain or the Operator must also make them well aware of the ways in which they should alert others. They must not panic themselves because that would only leave a really bad impression on those being informed i.e. they would get more panicked. Also to inform that they must make friendly ways when getting out. Rushing out, putting others aside and trying to get out of the boar first will be of no use, others will start doing this and eventually the balance will be lost.
  • There are some kind of regular drills that are to be taken while boating. These regular drills can be beneficial in case a fire breaks out. Everyone must know how to use these grills.
  • The captain or the operator should also make sure that all the safety instruments are working properly and that none is being hard to use.
  • In some areas, it is a legal requirements. The boaters must be told and well informed about everything before getting on the boat.
  • This not only makes boating a more safer activity but also provides a sense of safety to the passengers. They have this knowlegde that the Captain and the crew actually cares about them and want them to be safe and sound.

A good Captain or a good Operator is the one who does his job before the arrival of the adverse circumstances. This is not only beneficial for the passengers but the captain himself is benefited by it too. Therefore, duties must be done properly in order to ensure safety.
